In January 2016, the California Department of Education released a Request for Applications for the Infant/Toddler Quality Rating and Improvement System (I/T QRIS) Block Grant. The grant, which in total will allocate over $24 million from the state general fund, is intended to provide training, technical assistance, and resources to help infant and toddler childcare providers meet a higher standard of quality.
FIRST 5 gathered with local consortium partners to solicit input and identify the quality improvement activities and incentives necessary to support the quality of the 51 infant/toddler sites who are currently participating in the county’s local QRIS, as well as 22 new incoming sites. Based upon this feedback, FIRST 5 submitted a block grant application prioritizing these needs.
In March 2016, Santa Clara County received over $1 million in I/T QRIS Block Grant funds to ensure providers have what they need to give California’s youngest learners the high-quality early learning experiences
necessary to provide a solid foundation for future success in school and beyond.
