With two-thirds of the population overweight or obese, it is essential for clinicians to become more competent in the care of patients with these conditions. This course, designed for generalist and specialist physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician professionals who provide quality care to the obese and refer to other obesity specialists will provide a focused, evidence-based discussion of current strategies for the management of obesity. The course will feature a nationally-recognized multidisciplinary faculty, a detailed syllabus, and a substantial time for questions and discussion.
The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinical practice in the care of patients with obesity. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies:
to evaluate overweight and obese patients for metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and other health complications of obesity;
to assess social and psychological factors which may contribute to obesity;
to treat all populations of patients with obesity including choldren, adults;
to select and implement state-of-the-art diets and exercise programs for weight loss and weight maintenance;
to use medications for weight loss and monitoring them for efficacy and side effects;
to select patients for bariatric surgery and advise them as to the risk and benefits;
to recommend current surgical approaches for obesity and better perform pre-operative and post-operative care;
to counsel patients about the potential role for bariatric surgery in the care of patients with complex medical illnesses including diabetes, liver disease, and kidney failure.
