In this dynamic, one-day workshop, participants will create a mental model of poverty, review poverty research, examine a theory of change, and analyze poverty through the prism of the hidden rules of class, resources, family structure, and language. The seminar puts into words what many verteran professionals and community members have experienced. Throughout the workshop. participants will recieve not only a broad overview of concepts, but also learn specific strategies for improving outcomes for people living in poverty. This seminar gives both the social service provider and the community member key lessons in dealing with individuals from poverty.

Topics Include:

  • Increasing awareness of the differences in economic cultures
  • How those differences affect the opportunities for success
  • Developig an action plan to improve service to clients
  • Improving retention rates for new hires from poverty

This seminar is based on the book Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities, a collaboration between Ruby K. Payne, Philip DeVol, and Terie Dreussi Smith.
