Since 2002, the Silicon Valley Reads program has encouraged everyone in Santa Clara County to read the same book, at the same time, and talk about it. It is presented by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, Santa Clara County Library and the San Jose Public Library Foundation, with funding from foundations, nonprofit organizations, corporations, and private donors.
The featured adult books for 2012, The Muslim Next Door, by Sumbul Ali-Karamali and The Butterfly Mosque by G. Willow Wilson, invite discussion around this year’s theme, “Muslim and American -Two Perspectives”.
FIRST 5 Santa Clara County has partnered with Silicon Valley Reads for the past several years recommending the companion book for toddlers. This year we have selected “It’s OK To Be Different” by Todd Parr which uses colorful drawings and reassuring statements that focus on acceptance and individuality.
One Green Apple by Eve Bunting for Grades K-2, My Name is Bilal by Asma Mobin-Uddin for Grades 2-6 and Skunk Girl by Sheba Karim for Grades 7 and up are the other featured children’s books.
Several reading events of It’s OK To Be Different will take place at local libraries and Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose in February, March and April. Visit www.siliconvalleyreads.org for a calendar of events listing over 100+ author events, films, art exhibits and discussions in support of Silicon Valley Reads 2012.
