Event Description

Nationally, the goal of the Safe Start initiative is to increase the understanding of and promote community investment in preventing and reducing the impact of violence on children. New scientific research is uncovering the psychological impact of violence on the developing human brain and the long-term consequences of this exposure.

After exposure to violence, young children may exhibit behaviors, symptoms, and emotional difficulties relating to their trauma. This may affect the relationship between the child and their caregivers. Building these relationships and improving permanency is the focus of Edgewood Safe Start.

On August 1st, 2008, Edgewood is hosting a free summit to share information on the Child- Parent Psychotherapy model, an evidence based practice, used at Edgewood with kinship families.  Dr. Patricia Van Horn, co-founder of this model, will be one of the key note speakers.  This summit will help us as providers best understand how trauma and violence effect our families and communities.

I would highly recommend this opportunity for all to attend in support of this very exciting program at Edgewood.  Not only will you be able to attain tools to best work with our families, but also help to increase awareness and support within our community.

The deadline for registration is July 25 th, 2008
