Where could you find Scooby Doo, a Magician and a Princess all movin’ and groovin’ together? At FIRST 5’s “Kids Get Off the Couch Day” on April 18th - a day of free activities that promoted fun, fitness and obesity prevention – at Barnes & Noble - Stevens Creek, in San Jose.
Nearly 1,000 parents and young children attended the all-day event that promoted TV Turnoff Week -- families were encouraged to get up and get moving instead of playing video/computer games or watching television. One lucky winner took home a beautiful blue tricycle donated by Willow Glen Bicycles.

Families got moving with Dance Kids and a cast of familiar costumed characters. Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming kicked off storytime for young children, who laughed at the different types of bellies featured in “The Belly Book,” and learned why they should avoid eating too much junk food. Parents learned great tips on how to read aloud with their children and their burning child health questions were answered by a pediatrician and nutritionist from Kaiser Permanente.
Throughout the day children learned about healthy treats they can make from the Junior League of San Jose’s Kids in the Kitchen program. Other little ones colored sheets of the “Super Healthies,” a group of superheroes whose mission is to promote health and nutrition.

The highlight of the day was the Papa Hugs Band, who entertained a standing-room only crowd with tunes that promoted wiggling, jiggling and jumping around. Each family received Papa Hugs’ new CD. Parents then learned how to keep that movement going with fun family outings by Elina Wong, author of “Kids Adventures Around San Francisco.” Kids made their own healthy Bagel Faces and Banana Splits with a nutritionist from Choices for Children. The day ended on a high note with lots of singing, dancing and music presented by the Calabazas Library!

FIRST 5 Santa Clara County thanks Barnes & Noble - Stevens Creek, Kaiser Permanente, Choices for Children, the Junior League of San Jose, Willow Glen Bicycles, Elina Wong, and the Bring Me A Book Foundation for helping put on this wonderful event for children!
