De Anza College, in collaboration with Santa Clara County Health and Hospital Systems-Department of Mental Health, FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, and other service providers, developed a 20-quarter unit Certificate Program which provides training in early childhood mental health. The focus is to provide entry-level knowledge and expertise in early childhood mental health for those pursuing an AA degree, to develop an academic path to higher education in this field, and to influence the field both locally and statewide.
The first graduates of this program are from organizations such as: Alum Rock Counseling Center, FIRST 5 AmeriCorps, FIRST 5 Court Specialists, Friends Outside, Mexican-American Community Services Agency, St. Joseph’s Family Center and Silicon Valley Education Foundation.
The graduates were commended by Carolyn Wilkins-Greene, Dean of the Social Sciences and Humanities Division at De Anza College, during a ceremony honoring their dedicated pursuit towards advanced training and education in the field of early childhood mental health.
“This program is helping to create a better society and community for all our children. Children are in need of quality early education and comprehensive mental health intervention and service providers need to have the knowledge and skills to better support these children,” said De Anza College Department Chair, Mayra Cruz.
