Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten
“Parents hope for a bright future for their children, which begins with success in school,”states Dr. Charles Weis, Superintendent of Schools - Santa Clara County. “Parents often ask me what they should specifically do to get their child ready for kindergarten. They are surprised to learn that ABCs and 123s do not top the list. FIRST 5 Santa Clara County and the Partnership for School Readiness have created an essential Parent Handbook that gives straightforward tips for families to get ready for school. I encourage all parents and caregivers to follow the recommendations found in the I’m Ready for Kindergarten handbook to position their child for success in kindergarten and throughout life.”
Starting Kindergarten is a new beginning for learning, developing friendships, confidence and independence. However, it is normal for both children and parents to feel anxious about being completely prepared to start Kindergarten as well. FIRST 5 Santa Clara County in collaboration with the Santa Clara County Partnership for School Readiness has developed this handbook to help parents and caregivers prepare children for a successful Kindergarten experience.

Please Note:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 1381 (Simitian), the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010, enacting historic reform to early education that will help ensure that 120,000 more children each year are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.
The act requires California children to be five years old by September 1 instead of December 2 in order to enter Kindergarten. In doing so, California will join the majority of other States that have this age requirement. This minor, but nonetheless important change in kindergarten entry-age will create numerous benefits for children and teachers.Given the benefits of this legislation, FIRST 5 Santa Clara County was a strong supporter of its passage.
