FIRST 5 Community of Learning

The Community of Learning (COL) is a cross-disciplinary training institute that creates and strengthens a workforce of professionals and community members on best practices regarding the developmental needs of young children and their families.

STRENGTHENING OUR DIVERSE WORKFORCE

The COL’s evidence-based and promising practices include:
  • Cornell University Family Development Credential
  • Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate of Achievement
  • Program for Infant/Toddler Care
  • Cultural Competency
  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
  • Dyadic Therapy

FOSTERING CHILD-CENTERED, FAMILY-FOCUSED SYSTEMS OF CARE

All trainings are strength-based and focused on the developmental needs of children and their family. By embedding these principles, FIRST 5 ensures that systems of care are effectively responding to the needs of children and families in our community.

INCREASING ACCESS TO EVIDENCE-BASED AND PROMISING PRACTICES:

The COL ensures community access to professional development opportunities by partnering with County Departments and other training institutes. Providers can easily view and register for innovative workshops online at www.first5kids.org/partners/training_workshops.

LEVERAGING PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUSTAINABILITY

FIRST 5 collaborates with diverse partners to ensure that professional development opportunities are integrated into higher education institutions. The partnership with Santa Clara County Mental Health Department and De Anza College ensures access to the Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate Program. Through the collaboration with EMQ Children and Family Services, West Valley College, and Social Services Agency, FIRST 5 provides the Cornell University Family Development Credential at no cost to partners.
